Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Distillery: James B. Beam Distilling Co.
80 proof
Basil Hayden's Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is known for its light and approachable character. Named after Basil Hayden Sr., a distiller from the late 18th century, this bourbon is part of the Jim Beam small batch collection. It is celebrated for its high rye content in the mash bill, which contributes to its distinctive flavor profile. The bourbon is aged for an undisclosed period, resulting in a smooth, easy-drinking experience with a balanced blend of flavors.
Reviews
Skip unless you're a total beginner or need a super-mild high-rye sipper. $40-50 is steep for what you get—plenty of better easy drinkers that aren't this watered-down.
Light nose of caramel, vanilla, peach, oak. Palate is thin, straightforward with vanilla, sweet oak, raisin, honey. Short finish with light oak, caramel, spice. Low proof makes it mellow but often bland/thin.
Review rating: 6 / 10
Mild but pleasant; significant improvement in 10yr but standard is straightforward/light
Bland with short finish; nice stepping stone but not worth seeking at ~$37
Thin, oak-heavy, underwhelming at low proof; hesitant to recommend for beginners
Bland at the price; very light/watery, wouldn't buy again
Sub-par; char, burnt sugar, young oak—prefer higher proof Beam products
